What is Diashine?
Diashine is a compound which will give a high gloss on a variety of surfaces, including ceramics, composites and metals. It is manufactured in a range of abrasive grit sizes and is contained in different viscosity carriers, or bases. For Laboratory use the
Fine (Our most popular selling grade),
Medium and
Coarse compounds are hard. For
Fine/Soft see below.
How do I use Diashine with porcelain?
First the surface of the restoration should be smooth. Rubber wheel this as required. Then lightly load the brush, or felt by rotating it at low speed in the compound. Apply to the ceramic surface at low to medium HP speeds. Follow normal polishing procedures by moving the brush or felt in a circular motion.
How does it work?
Because of the unique composition of the binder, the compound stays on the rotary applicator and the object being polished. It forms a plastic residue on the surface, continually reusing the grit. This enables a high gloss to be obtained quickly and with a minimum amount of compound.
Can I polish metals?
All types of metals can be polished to a high lustre, including high gold alloys and titanium.
How do I remove excess material after polishing?
The compounds are water soluble. Use a soft brush, such as a toothbrush with water, or light use of a steam cleaner. The steam cleaner is not recommended for removal from composites, unless the cooler part of the jet is used.
What are the different types of Diashine and what are they used for?
The most popular is Fine. This produces a high gloss on the materials described above. The Coarse grit will result in a semi shiny, more flat finish. The Medium produces a faster finish, glossy, but not a final high gloss. Finishes depend on what the technician is looking for in the individual restoration.
What is the Diashine Fine/Soft?
Originally intended for composites and used with a soft bristle brush or cotton buff. It is increasingly being used by technicians for ceramics and metals. We learn a lot from techs.
What about the I/O (Intra-Oral)Diashine?
This is the softest version allowing easy extrusion from the syringe. Used mainly in intra-oral applications for final polishing of ceramics and composites. Comprising food grade materials, it has a mild peppermint odor and a slightly higher grit concentration than the laboratory types. This type was produced after we found Laboratory tubs being used chairside.
What do you suggest for applying the compound?
In the past we considered felt wheels and stiff bristle brushes were most useful (Except for composites, where a soft brush should be used). A number of experienced technicians have recently corrected this notion and an increasing number are using soft brushes for the result they require. Experimentation will allow the individual to decide the method which best suits the situation.
How about applying the I/O (Intra-Oral)Diashine?
With all new orders we provide sample RA latch brushes for chairside use. One is a small 12mm wheel and the other is a pointed prophy type. A good alternative is a soft prophy cup which will adapt to the contours of the restoration.
